Volkswagen postpones launch of the new ID.4 and electric SUV to 2030

There is news from Berlin that Volkswagen has postponed the launch of the new ID.4 model under its next-generation Trinity EV project to the early 2030s. The move is part of an ongoing reshuffle of plans within the company, which was previously scheduled to launch a new electric SUV in 2026. The main reasons for this delay are said to be software problems and difficulties at the Carriot subsidiary.

The Trinity Project, launched under former CEO Herbert Diess, was aimed at unifying Volkswagen's EV platforms. Under it, the company planned to launch a new ID.4 and later another electric SUV using its new SSP platform. However, this launch has been postponed due to software issues and other problems under the leadership of Diess' successor Oliver Blume.

Volkswagen has designed a new version of its existing MEB platform as a solution to this delay, on which it plans to introduce another ID.4 model in 2026. Additionally, an electric Golf compact car on the SSP platform will be launched by the end of this decade.

According to German business paper Handelsblatt, the launch of the new model has been postponed due to weak demand for Volkswagen's electric cars and the need to cut costs. The company is feeling the need to reorganize its production network and cut costs, which has led to a change in plans for new products.

A Volkswagen spokesperson declined to comment on internal plans. The company's board has argued in an internal document that there is no immediate need for a large car on the SSP platform, so the release of the new model has been postponed. The need for cost-cutting and production capacity reduction, mentioned in the company's results conference, is a key reason behind this delay.
