Ford's latest patent application has created a stir in the world of road safety. If this patent becomes a reality, it can give the police a great advantage in imposing fines for speeding. According to the patent application, Ford's system can be installed in police interceptor vehicles, which will be able to identify vehicles that are speeding.
The highlight of this system is its onboard camera, which can take pictures of speeding vehicles. After this, information can be collected on specific features seen in the picture such as license plate, paint color, or visible damage to identify the vehicle. This information can be shared with other police vehicles and Internet of Things (IoT) based networks, which can help law enforcement officials take action quickly and effectively.
Ford first filed this patent application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in January 2023, and it was formally published on July 18, 2024. However, several media reports have raised doubts that this technology could also be implemented in customer vehicles. A Ford spokesperson has clarified that this patent is specifically for law enforcement vehicles and there is no intention to share driving data of any customer vehicle using it.
Ford says that this patent is intended to automate existing law enforcement capabilities, and is only a potential future technology. While many patents eventually become part of new products, until further information about this patent comes out, it is unclear when and how this technology will come into commercial use.
The possibilities of this technology and its impact will continue to be debated, but it is certainly an interesting development that could change future road safety and law enforcement methods.
