Ford and Mazda issue new warnings over dangers of faulty airbag inflators |
Ford, Mazda and other major automakers have issued a serious safety warning, stating that their vehicles are using faulty airbag inflators manufactured by Takata. The warning was made almost nine years ago, but unfortunately, there are still more than 374,300 vehicles in the US running with such dangerous inflators. Globally, the number reaches 765,600.
Mazda has added 83,000 more vehicles to the issue. Ford and Mazda have now advised car and truck owners to stop driving their vehicles immediately and wait for a new drive.
Given the severity of this problem, in 2022 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released a report confirming that a driver was killed in a 2006 Ford Ranger pickup truck due to an airbag inflator bursting. NHTSA reported at the time that there have been 23 deaths in the U.S. caused by such inflators.
Ford's warning covers approximately 374,290 vehicles from the 2004-2012 model years, including the 2005-2006 GT, 2005-2014 Mustang, and 2007-2011 Ranger. Mazda's warning covers 82,893 vehicles from the 2003-2015 model years, including the 2004-2009 B-Series and 2007-2015 CX-9.
Ford said it has already made numerous efforts to inform owners about these dangerous airbag inflators, including more than 121 million outreach efforts. They are still providing vehicle owners with benefits such as free towing, mobile repairs, and loaner vehicles.
Both Ford and Mazda warn that driving your vehicle if it has faulty airbag inflators could be life-threatening. Please take immediate action and follow these instructions to stay safe.
