The electrification of classic cars has sparked debate in the automotive world. Some consider it the right way to preserve older models, while others are upset about converting classic gas engines to electric power. Amid this debate, British-based Arcade Cars has tried to strike a balance with its new project, the Arcade GE 230. This resto-modded Mercedes-Benz GE 230 will be available with electric and modern gas propulsion options.
The Arcade GE 230 starts with a classic G-Class that was originally launched with a 2.3-liter inline-four engine. This engine produces 125 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque. In addition, an upgraded 2.8-liter gas engine with 149 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque is also available.
Arcade's electric sojourn project is particularly interesting. The company is working in collaboration with Everrati, a company known for converting classic cars like the Porsche 911, Land Rover Defender, and Superformance GT40 to electric. While the specifics of the project are not yet known, it is sure to be a topic of discussion among classic car lovers.
The interior of the Arcade GE 230 is far more luxurious than the utilitarian accommodations of the original model. Arcade offers a range of Alcantara and premium leather, and buyers can customize nearly every aspect of the cabin, including the steering wheel. In addition, the company also fits modern electronics, such as an Apple CarPlay-enabled touchscreen and a variety of speaker and subwoofer options.
None of this expense comes cheap. Arcade has decided to price it starting at $130,000. Deliveries will begin later this year. If you're eager to get behind the wheel, Arcade has a few gas-powered models for sale on its site.
This EV avatar of the classic G-Wagon is sure to start a new discussion among classic car lovers and EV enthusiasts.
