brand-new Airbus A350-900 from Monday |
The A350-900, part of a larger order from Airbus, will initially operate on domestic routes for crew familiarization before transitioning to international medium and long-haul flights in mid-2024.
Air India, now under Tata ownership after privatization, aims to position itself as a global airline of repute by upgrading its fleet and enhancing passenger experience.
The CEO, Campbell Wilson, describes the A350 as a "game-changer," set to elevate the airline's offerings, open new routes, and facilitate expansion.
The move comes as Air India faces stiff competition from cash-rich Gulf-based carriers renowned for superior services and modern fleets.
With the A350, Air India seeks to attract passengers away from Middle Eastern giants like Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways, positioning itself as the preferred choice for long and ultra-long-haul travel to and from India.
The A350 aircraft, originally intended for Russian carrier Aeroflot, was redirected to Air India due to sanctions on Moscow over the conflict in Ukraine.
The airline will receive a total of six A350-900s, with five more expected to join the fleet by March, as part of a broader 250-plane order from Airbus.
The A350-900 features a three-class cabin configuration with business, premium economy, and economy classes. Notable amenities include business-class private suites with direct aisle access, premium economy seats with adjustable headrests and leg rests, and an economy-class offering with improved seating comfort.
The aircraft also introduces a new brand identity, featuring refreshed amenities, bed linens, chinaware, and glassware.
Furthermore, Air India is rolling out a new in-flight entertainment (IFE) system with over 2,200 hours of content, including movies, television shows, and audio.
This IFE system will be available on the A350s, recently acquired Boeing 777-200LRs, and upcoming wide-body aircraft, as part of the carrier's commitment to enhancing the passenger experience across its fleet.
